Now stop right there.

Right now, you’re probably thinking, “No, of course not, Lisa. I’m not afraid at all.”

I hear that answer all the time in my Soul Blazing sessions here in Hollywood.  So let’s drill deeper.

If you’re not afraid of success, then why haven’t you achieved it at the level you desire?

Your answer might be, “Well, look, I’m plenty ‘successful,” but there are goals I haven’t succeeded in accomplishing because I need to build my website, get my branding and copywriting together.  Oh yeah, and I’m supposed to set up some auto-responder thing-a-ma-gig.  Oh…and then writing my own book and creating my product.  And of course, I’ve yet to get around to designing my business cards and writing that e-book I’ve been meaning to….

But I can’t afford to do those things because I don’t have the  time or the money to invest to take my career to the next level.

You have created mental constructs that sound reasonable enough to justify inaction.  I mean, you’re right.  If you don’t have your website together, your branding razor sharp, your positioning professionally strategized, all your products, book, e-books, and professional promotional materials together, success is going to be hard to achieve!  So it’s not that these success excuses aren’t legitimate, because they definitely are. What’s NOT legitimate is the fact that you have yet to take aggressive and immediate action to silence your Impostors, put them in check, and do the work that needs to be done to achieve your goals.

I’m reminded of that great quote we’ve all heard from Eleanor Roosevelt.  She said, “Get what you want out of life.  No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.”

That’s absolutely true.

You’re in charge of your own success. You’re accountable for its fulfillment.  And that means that sometimes YOU are the one that needs to learn to let go.  Do you know the story of the monkey?

 ”A monkey sees a nut in a hole and reaches in to grab it. Once he’s closed his fist around it, he can’t get his hand back out of the narrow opening. He can’t free himself unless he lets go of the nut, but because he’s afraid to lose it, he won’t let go.”

Trying to avoid risk is like clinging to that nut. You may think you’re playing it safe by holding on to what you have, but in reality you’re just hindering your own progress.

So how can you make risk work for you? The first rule: Take risks that are calculated, not crazy. There’s a big difference between rafting in white water with a helmet and an experienced guide and jumping on an inner tube to soar over a waterfall on a whim. When you’re considering taking a risk, ask yourself: How can you maximize your chances of success while minimizing the potential downside?

At root, success is about leadership at the most elemental level of all—leadership over yourself.

Jill Bolte Taylor is a brain researcher who studied her own stroke as it happened.  In her TED talk, A Stroke of Insight, this amazing lady tells her story.

Imagine being consciously aware you are having a stroke and watching as your body loses its ability to function.  It took Jill 8 years to recover from her stroke but in doing so she learnt that we really are a life force and have the power to choose who, how and what we want to be in the world.

Who do you want to be? What do you want to do?  Sometimes universe steps in and tells you it is time to change, remember Jill’s comment, “I’m a very busy woman, I don’t have time for a stroke! Well I can’t stop it so I’ll just do this for a week or two then I’ll get back to my routine.”  

It is interesting that Jill’s first thought was not so much that she’s having a stroke and concern for her health but more that she didn’t have time to have one!  How often do you think “I don’t have time for….”

Everything you will do today is a form of communication.  In fact, the problem is most people don’t realize how much they are saying by NOT saying anything.  For example, when you fail to thank employees or give them credit where credit is due, others notice.  And when you send out emails littered with grammatical or typographical errors, the recipient feels slighted or, worse, thinks you lack care or competence.

And of course, nowhere does communication impact your life more than in your relationships with the people you love and care for.  When you think about how many frictions and disagreements we encounter in life, almost all of them boil down to one common denominator—poor communication.

Your ability to succeed in business and life hinges on your ability to clearly and persuasively communicate.  Always remember, how you communicate—whether in person, nonverbally, in print, or in your visual presentation via your website—stands to propel you higher than you ever imagined.

As he says, “Very many people go through their whole lives having no real sense of what their talents may be, or if they have any to speak of.”  Do you feel like that?  Our communities do depend on a diversity of talents.  If everyone went to college and followed a academic career what would happen when we needed a policeman or fireman?  There would be no more going to theatre or watching movies as there would no longer be any actors, directors, producers, camera crew.  So if know this, which we do, why is our education system not customized instead of standardized?

I love this quote “Everyday our children spread their dreams underneath our feet, and we should tread softly.”

Have you noticed some people vibrate on such an intense level that when they walk into a room, you can’t take your eyes off them?  And not because they’re so beautiful, it’s because they possess so much self-confidence and they have an aura around them like they have a secret or they’re tapped in.  And then there’s the opposite side of this spectrum.  Someone else can enter a room and he’s invisible and others can still leave a room and the room brightens, because they’re so toxic and negative.  Have you ever noticed that?

The people that can capture our attention regardless of what they’re doing, have charisma.  Their magnetism is potent, they effortlessly make a dynamic impact.  A few years ago, Julia Roberts (when she accepted the Oscar for Best Actress for Erin Brockovich) said that she can’t believe she has an Oscar and Denzel Washington doesn’t.  She went on saying that she could watch him for hours just reading the yellow pages because he’s so fascinating and talented.  What I think she was saying is that he radiates a vitality and charisma that is infectious.  That by simply watching him, one gets transformed.  So no form of social networking, marketing or resume reveals more about us than the light that radiates from our being.

Do you have that magnetism?

Parmahansa Yogananda says that, “Spiritual magnetism is the power of the soul to attract or create whatever it needs for all-around happiness and wellbeing.” 

To accelerate your magnetic frequency and manifest your vision for your life, you must enter the laboratory of your own mind and soul and evolve through three domains:

-       The first one is discovering your gifts and talents
-       The second is getting in touch with your Authentic Soul through visualization
-       The third is practicing meditation regularly

When we talk about spirituality it’s such a loose term these days and people mistake it for religion or mistake it for all sorts of things.  I want to share with you a little bit about what one of my gurus said.

He said, “Spirituality really begins where religion ends.” 

Spirituality is easily identifiable with mysticism because the mystic or spiritual journey is an inner journey of the heart.  And the reason I found that people have turned to spirituality is that it’s a way to go inward without any names.

So when people ask when they should start a spiritual practice, I share with them this beautiful little phrase from Baba G.

“‘As a bird needs two wings to fly, so a human being needs the two wings of existence’ – the spiritual and the material to lead a natural and harmonious life.”

If either is neglected for one or the other, such a life becomes unnatural and the results cannot be what we desire them to be.  Spirituality provides the weight to restore the balance within ourselves.  The highest bliss is located in our Soul.

So spirituality brings lasting and meaningful changes to our lives through inner transformation, and as we change, the universe changes around us.  And we wonder how that is happening.

Have you ever had a bad day where you got into an intense argument with someone and then when you went back out into the world, you got a speeding ticket, or crashed your car or broke something?  Everything happens, especially in threes, when you’re spiritually off-balance.

Have you noticed that when you’re spiritually balanced, life seems to flow easily and effortlessly and people tend to say, ‘You lead a charmed life.  Life always works out for you.’  It’s not that challenges aren’t presented anymore, it’s that when you’re in alignment with your soul, you have the power to handle situations with grace instead of reacting. Because when you’re in touch with your humanity and living life with an open heart, miracles happen because you live each day with more compassion for others and for yourself, which makes you more tolerant which creates a life that feels and looks blessed. You meet the right people, your creativity is on fire, romance skyrockets…

Why not take some time out to mediate each day, if you don’t already, even 10 minutes in silence to gather your thoughts is a great start.  You may find ideas or solutions you’ve been seeking suddenly start to flow.  Grab a journal and write it down.  We have some great journals available at the Soul Blazing website.

Remember… Shift Happens!

It is true today that people (children and adults alike) are so afraid of being wrong that it is gradually killing their creativity.  In fact as Sir Ken says, “we are educating people out of creativity.”  Being a writer, producer and traveler I am a very creative person and I see the same creativity in my daughter.  I have always given her a free reign but I can see how easily that could stifled in other homes or at schools.

Do you feel you have some creative talents that you’ve never had chance to express or explore?  Is there something you’ve always wanted to learn or do just for the fun of it?  I always encourage my clients to keep a journal, write down your thoughts and feelings, your goals, your dreams.  Let the pen flow and see what comes our – you may be very surprised!

Before sitting to write pages of a new novel, Ernest Hemingway spent hours peeling oranges and gazing into the fire.

One morning, a reporter noticed this strange habit.

“Don’t you think you’re wasting your time?” asked the journalist. “You’re so famous, shouldn’t you be doing more important things?”

“I’m preparing my soul to write, like a fisherman preparing his tackle before going out to sea,” replied Hemingway.

“If I don’t do this, and think only the fish matter, I’ll never achieve anything.”

This is so true.  Our souls need time to access our genius.  If we think writing or any kind of creating comes from thinking and only thinking, we’re sadly mistaken.  The most praised writers always thank God or the universe, or say, they don’t deserve the praise because they didn’t write the book; they just dictated what they heard in their head. JK Rowling, the writer of the Harry Potter series said, “I had the idea of a boy who was a wizard and didn’t yet know what the story was.  I never sat down and wondered, ‘What shall I write about next?’  It just came, fully formed.”   I’ll repeat that again, she said, “It just came, fully formed.”  So the best way to be productive is sometimes to do nothing, but listen.

Carl Jung was asked in an interview if he believed in God, he said: “I could not say I believe. I know! I have had the experience of being gripped by something stronger than myself, something that people call God.”

I know from my personal experiences as a filmmaker, producer, and author that you can’t rush “art.”  And with “art” I mean any type of endeavor that is creative – writing a business plan, creating a non-profit, organizing a rally, scheduling your family’s monthly activities, running a business … When you’re creating, I always think of it as co-creating with that mysterious Unknown Force.  Some days it seems impossible and other days it seems that I’m on fire. The difference in my days was that I re-fueled my spirit by sitting in silence, listening, usually outdoors. Re-fueling.  My work came from a deeper place and it just flowed, compared to forcing it.

When I was just working, working, working, putting in the hours, I became dead inside.  I felt like I had nothing of value to share.  Then I realized that one of my Impostors had showed up, my Over Thinker, rearing her ugly head, throwing doubt and fear in my path.  But when I learned to refuel regularly by sitting in silence at a lake while taking in the sights and sounds; walking, hiking, listening to classical music, being in nature —magic would happen.  I could create for hours and be happily surprised at what came out of me.  So, put your ego aside and merge with the Universal Force and allow magic to happen.
