TED Talk Tuesday: Are Schools Killing Creativity?

This week’s TED Talk is by Sir Ken Robinson.  His talk has had 15,680,435 views – the highest number of views for any TED talk to date and with very good reason.  Sir Ken’s talk it not only informative and entertaining, he also makes a profoundly moving case for creating an education system that nurtures (rather than undermines) creativity.

It is true today that people (children and adults alike) are so afraid of being wrong that it is gradually killing their creativity.  In fact as Sir Ken says, “we are educating people out of creativity.”  Being a writer, producer and traveler I am a very creative person and I see the same creativity in my daughter.  I have always given her a free reign but I can see how easily that could stifled in other homes or at schools.

Do you feel you have some creative talents that you’ve never had chance to express or explore?  Is there something you’ve always wanted to learn or do just for the fun of it?  I always encourage my clients to keep a journal, write down your thoughts and feelings, your goals, your dreams.  Let the pen flow and see what comes our – you may be very surprised!

I have a selection of journals available on my website, including the “Explosive Creativity” journal, please visit the Boutique at the Soul Blazing website to see all the journals we have available.

TED Talk Tuesday: The Virtual Choir

Wow!! This week’s TED Talk moved me to tears, it is incredibly powerful.

Eric Whitacre has inspired millions by bringing together “virtual choirs,” singers from many countries spliced together on video. In this week’s TED Talk, for the first time ever, he creates the experience in real time, as 32 singers from around the world Skype in to join an onstage choir for a stunning performance of “Cloudburst” written by Eric Whitacre and based on the poem by Octavio Paz.

Such an amazing talent!  I would love to hear your feedback on this week’s TED Talk.  Did it stir emotions that surprised you?

“What hits you straight between the eyes is the honesty, optimism and sheer belief that passes any pretension. This is music that can actually make you smile.”

Creating the “Impostors”

Communication is such a big part of every one’s life.  No one can escape from communicating, especially from communicating with our self.  Are you aware that you’re dialoguing with yourself constantly?  Your “Impostors” and your “Authentic Soul” are always debating ideas, facts, the decisions you make.

Love is what got me even interested in this topic.  I happened to meet a guy who I found difficult to communicate with about anything that was “sensitive.”  We went to a therapist; a good one but needed a system in place to help us on a daily basis.  Not just a referee with insight a couple times a year.

When we came up with names for our King/Queen “Impostor(s)” and our secondary Impostors, our arguments diminished, we had a handle on who we were talking with and understanding that “talking” was pointless because “we” weren’t actually present, out Impostor were so what’s the point of listening to them argue.  When we really got that concept, we gained more compassion for each other and gave a lot more slack. Eventually, it became “fun” communicating even when we had different points of views or moods because of how we handled it.  We were both so impressed with our new skills.  We got to discover who was present and we’d address that person.  So our daily petty fights were no longer needed.  They were resolved before even happening.

TED Talk Tuesday: Defeating the Bullies

This weeks TED Talk, by Shane Koyczan, was originally posted on YouTube on Feb. 19, 2013 and by the close of the month his spoken-word poem about bullying, captivated millions as a viral video.

At the end of his TED Talk, shown below, he received a standing ovation from the audience.

“If you can’t see anything beautiful about yourself, get a better mirror.” Shane Koyczan

What an powerful story about bullying and survival.

Bullying is not new by any means, but it has been featured in the media more and more regularly.  Does it this mean it is increasing or are we just more aware of the enormity of the problem?  Well, with the rise in social media and internet use, there is now no escape from your bullies, they effectively follow you home via internet/social media/chat rooms.

It is time to take a stand and stamp out bullying, the impact of Shane’s video shows how important this topic is to millions of people around the world.

Bullying can come from allowing your Impostors to take over your soul and invade your thoughts and behavior.

I am holding a free online video conference on March 19th at 3pm PST, where I will be discussing the 8 Impostors and how to identify and control them. If you would like to join me, please register for free by clicking here – Shindig Event – Soul Blazing Secrets.

I look forward to seeing you then!

TED Talk Tuesday: Power of Identity

“It’s that mind-heart connection that I believe compels us to not just be attentive to all the bright and dazzling things but also the dark and difficult things.” Bryan Stevenson

Bryan’s TED Talk – We Need to Talk About an Injustice is an engaging and entertaining presentation on the hard truths regarding our justice system.  Take a look…

A shocking statistic that one in nine people sentenced to death row have been exonerated for the crime they were accused of committing.

We hope you are enjoying your TED Talk Tuesday blogs, we would love to hear your comments on them and our other blogs.
