Meet Your Dominant Imposter: The Joker

Your Dominant Imposter isn’t who you are.

It’s the survival strategy you’ve relied on most often.

Everyone has an inner cast. Over thirty years of working with people, I noticed seven survival strategies that appeared again and again. Eventually, I gave them names.

The Joker was born the moment you believed that laughter was safer than tears. What began as humor eventually became a way of avoiding pain.

The moment you recognize The Joker’s voice, something changes. You remember that you don’t have to hide behind a smile to be accepted. You are enough, even when you’re honest about what you feel.

Core Belief

“If I keep everyone laughing, no one will see my pain.”

The Joker lightens every room, eases tension, and knows exactly how to make people smile. Humor becomes a shield that keeps uncomfortable emotions at a safe distance.

Recognition

You may notice yourself:

  • Making jokes when conversations become emotional.
  • Changing the subject when vulnerability appears.
  • Feeling uncomfortable when attention turns toward your own feelings.
  • Using humor to avoid conflict.
  • Being everyone’s entertainer while quietly carrying your own pain.
  • Wondering if anyone really knows the real you.

The Gift

Every Imposter begins as a gift.

The Joker brings joy, laughter, and perspective.

It helps people feel lighter during difficult moments.

Guided by your Authentic Soul, humor becomes healing instead of hiding.

The Cost

When The Joker keeps the microphone for too long, laughter replaces honesty.

People enjoy your company but may never truly know you.

Your feelings remain buried beneath the next joke.

You become emotionally unavailable—even to yourself.

Escape becomes loneliness.

Meet Your Authentic Soul

Your Authentic Soul knows that vulnerability isn’t weakness.

It understands that the people who truly love you want your heart—not just your humor.

Instead of asking,
“How can I keep this light?”

it quietly asks,
“What am I really feeling?”

That question returns you to the Director’s Chair.

Remember…

This is only one member of your inner cast.

You may recognize yourself in several Imposters because we all call on different survival strategies throughout life.

Your Dominant Imposter is simply the one that reaches for the microphone most often.

The moment you recognize The Joker, you’ve already begun to move beyond it. Awareness is how your Authentic Soul returns to the Director’s Chair.

The Escape Artists

The Joker belongs to the Escape Artists.

Escape Artists develop when difficult emotions feel too overwhelming to face directly. Their goal isn’t to avoid life—it’s to avoid pain.

The Joker escapes through humor, distraction, and keeping things light.

Its companion is The Egotist, who escapes by staying impressive, successful, or above vulnerability.

Different strategies. The same intention.

You don’t have an anger problem.

You don’t have a relationship problem.

You don’t have a confidence problem.

You have the wrong character holding the microphone.

The moment you recognize who’s speaking, you can choose who leads.
