Meet Your Dominant Imposter: The Victim

Your Dominant Imposter isn’t who you are.

It’s the survival strategy you’ve relied on most often.

Everyone has an inner cast. Over thirty years of working with people, I noticed seven survival strategies that appeared again and again. Eventually, I gave them names.

The Victim was born the moment you believed life wasn’t safe. It learned that expecting disappointment hurt less than hoping. What began as protection eventually became a way of seeing the world.

The moment you recognize The Victim’s voice, something changes. You remember that you are not the voice. You are the one listening.

Core Belief

“Life is happening to me, not for me.”

When The Victim takes over, life can feel unfair, overwhelming, or beyond your control. It often focuses on what has been lost, what others have done, or why things can’t change.

Recognition

You may notice yourself:

  • Feeling powerless to change your circumstances.
  • Waiting for someone else to rescue, understand, or validate you.
  • Replaying painful stories long after they’ve ended.
  • Believing other people have more choices than you do.
  • Assuming the future will repeat the past.
  • Saying, “Why does this always happen to me?”

The Gift

Every Imposter begins as a gift.

The Victim carries deep sensitivity.

It remembers pain so you don’t walk blindly into it again.

It often develops deep compassion because it knows what suffering feels like.

Guided by your Authentic Soul, that compassion becomes wisdom instead of helplessness.

The Cost

When The Victim keeps the microphone for too long, life begins to shrink.

You may stop taking risks because disappointment feels inevitable.

You may give away your power without realizing it.

You may become more committed to the story than to the possibility of a new ending.

Protection becomes limitation.

Meet Your Authentic Soul

Your Authentic Soul doesn’t deny what happened.

It simply refuses to let your past make every future decision.

It recognizes your pain without becoming your pain.

Instead of asking,
“Why is this happening to me?”

it quietly asks,
“What choice do I have now?”

That question returns you to the Director’s Chair.

Remember…

This is only one member of your inner cast.

You may recognize yourself in several Imposters because we all call on different survival strategies throughout life.

Your Dominant Imposter is simply the one that reaches for the microphone most often.

The moment you recognize The Victim, you’ve already begun to move beyond it. Awareness is how your Authentic Soul returns to the Director’s Chair.

The Fear Protectors

The Victim belongs to the Fear Protectors.

Fear Protectors develop when safety feels uncertain. Their goal isn’t to make life difficult—it’s to keep you from getting hurt.

The Victim protects you by expecting disappointment before it has the chance to surprise you.

Its companion is The Overthinker, who tries to create safety by thinking, planning, and preparing for every possible outcome.

Different strategies. The same intention.

Both are trying to protect you from emotional pain.

You don’t have an anger problem.

You don’t have a relationship problem.

You don’t have a confidence problem.

You have the wrong character holding the microphone.

The moment you recognize who’s speaking, you can choose who leads.
